How do I calculate how many tiles I need?

Tiles = area ÷ (tile area including grout) × (1 + waste). A 4 m × 3 m floor (12 m²) with 30 × 30 cm tiles and 3 mm grout needs about 131 tiles, or about 144 with 10% waste.

Waste allowance

  • 10% for straight layouts.
  • 15% for diagonal and herringbone patterns.
  • Keep a few spare tiles from the same batch for future repairs — shades vary between batches.
