Why slugs matter
The slug is one of the few on-page elements people see before clicking — it appears in search results, browser bars and shared links. A clear slug like /how-to-make-cold-brew tells both users and search engines what the page is about, while /p?id=8431&cat=2 tells them nothing. Google uses words in the URL as a light relevance signal and shows them in the breadcrumb-style URL line of results.
Rules this generator applies
- Lowercase only — URLs are case-sensitive on most servers, so
/Blogand/blogcan be two different pages. - Hyphens between words — Google treats hyphens as word separators; underscores join words together (
cold_brewreads as "coldbrew"). - Accents transliterated —
Café Crèmebecomescafe-creme, which works in every system and avoids percent-encoding. - Symbols removed — punctuation, emoji and brackets are dropped;
&becomes "and". - Stop words removed (optional) — "the", "a", "of" add length without meaning. They are only stripped when the title has more than three words, so short slugs stay natural.
- Length limit — cut at a word boundary (60 characters by default) so slugs never end mid-word.
Good vs bad slugs
| Title | Bad slug | Good slug |
|---|---|---|
| 10 Best Coffee Makers of 2026 (Tested!) | /10-Best-Coffee-Makers-of-2026-(Tested!) | /best-coffee-makers |
| How to Fix a 404 Error in WordPress | /how_to_fix_a_404_error_in_wordpress | /fix-404-error-wordpress |
| Cómo hacer café frío | /c%C3%B3mo-hacer-caf%C3%A9-fr%C3%ADo | /como-hacer-cafe-frio |
Notice that the best slug often drops the year. If you update the article in 2027, a year-free slug never has to change — and changing a slug means setting up a 301 redirect.
Bulk mode
Paste one title per line to generate many slugs at once — handy for importing products, migrating a blog or planning a content calendar. Copy the slug column straight into your spreadsheet or CMS.
After you choose a slug
- Keep it stable — every change needs a redirect and resets some signals.
- Avoid dates, IDs and session parameters in the path.
- Check the finished URL with the URL Parser and clean lists of existing URLs with the Bulk URL Cleaner.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use hyphens or underscores in URLs?
Use hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a space between words, but an underscore joins words together, so best-coffee is read as two words and best_coffee as one.
How long should a URL slug be?
Short enough to read at a glance — usually 3 to 6 words and under about 60 characters. Shorter slugs are easier to share and less likely to be cut off in search results.
Should I remove stop words from slugs?
Usually yes for long titles, because words like "the" and "of" add length without meaning. Keep them if removing them makes the slug confusing.
Is it bad to change a page slug?
Changing a slug creates a new URL. If you must change it, add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one and update internal links.
Can slugs contain non-English characters?
They can, but browsers percent-encode them (é becomes %C3%A9), which looks messy when shared. Transliterating to plain letters is the safest choice.
