Matrix Calculator

Calculate the determinant, inverse, transpose and rank of a matrix, or add, subtract and multiply two matrices.

Runs instantly in your browser — results update as you type.

How do I find the inverse of a matrix?

Type each row of the matrix on a new line with numbers separated by spaces, choose the operation and the result appears instantly. Inverses are computed with Gauss–Jordan elimination and determinants with LU-style row reduction with partial pivoting.

Example

For A = [[2, 1], [1, 3]], det(A) = 2 × 3 − 1 × 1 = 5 and A⁻¹ = [[0.6, −0.2], [−0.2, 0.4]].

A matrix has an inverse only when its determinant is not zero; A × B requires A’s column count to equal B’s row count.

Frequently asked questions

What size matrices are supported?

Up to 10 × 10.

Can I use decimals and negatives?

Yes.

What is rank?

The number of linearly independent rows (or columns).
