Why iPhone photos are HEIC
Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container), which is about half the size of JPG at the same quality. Many Windows apps, websites and printers still cannot open it, so converting to JPG makes photos universally compatible.
To make iPhones save JPG directly: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible.
