How do I calculate the golden ratio?

The golden ratio φ ≈ 1.618 divides a length so the whole relates to the longer part as the longer part relates to the shorter. Enter a number as the total, longer or shorter side and get both parts, a golden sequence of larger and smaller values and golden typography sizes for your font.

Example

A 1,000 px wide layout split by the golden ratio gives a 618 px content column and a 382 px sidebar. A 16 px font pairs with a line height of about 26 px and headings of about 26 px.

Where it is used

Logo construction, photography composition, layout grids, typography scales and product design — though it is a guide, not a strict rule.
