How do I calculate my body fat percentage?

The U.S. Navy method estimates body fat from tape measurements: height, neck and waist for men, plus hips for women. It is usually within 3–4 percentage points of a DEXA scan when you measure carefully.

How to measure

  • Neck: just below the larynx (Adam’s apple), tape sloping slightly down to the front.
  • Waist: men at the navel; women at the narrowest point.
  • Hips (women): the widest part of the buttocks.

Measure relaxed, on bare skin, in the morning. Add your weight to see fat mass and lean body mass.
