What is the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean is the sum of the numbers divided by how many there are; the median is the middle value when sorted; the mode is the most frequent value. Standard deviation measures how spread out the numbers are.

Statistics calculated

  • Mean (average), median and mode
  • Sum, minimum, maximum and range
  • Standard deviation and variance — sample (n − 1) and population (n)
  • First and third quartiles (Q1, Q3)
  • Geometric mean (for positive numbers)

Which average should I use?

Use the median when a few extreme values would distort the mean, such as incomes or house prices. Use the mean for evenly spread data, and the geometric mean for growth rates.

Paste numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines — a column copied from a spreadsheet works.

Frequently asked questions

Sample or population standard deviation?

Use sample when your numbers are a sample of a larger group (most cases); population when you have every value.

What if there is no mode?

If every value appears once, there is no mode.

Can I paste from Excel?

Yes, paste a column of numbers.
