What is Video schema?

Video schema (VideoObject) is structured data that describes a video on a page — title, thumbnail, upload date and duration — helping Google index the video and show it in video results and key moments.

How to use

  1. Paste the video URL. For YouTube, the thumbnail and embed URL are filled in automatically.
  2. Add the title, description, upload date and duration in seconds.
  3. Paste the code on the page where the video is embedded.

Google needs a thumbnail, a name and an upload date. Duration is written in ISO 8601 (e.g. PT2M5S) for you. Make the video the main content of the page for the best chance of video rich results.

Paste the generated <script type="application/ld+json"> block anywhere in the page's HTML (the head is common), then validate it with Google's Rich Results Test or our Structured Data Checker. Markup must describe content that is visible on the page.

Frequently asked questions

Do YouTube videos need schema?

Not strictly, Google understands YouTube embeds, but schema on your page clarifies the details.

What is the difference between contentUrl and embedUrl?

contentUrl points to the video file; embedUrl to a player. Provide whichever you have.

Does schema help my video rank on YouTube?

No, it affects Google Search on your own page, not YouTube search.
