SSH Key Generator (RSA, Ed25519)

Generate an SSH key pair (Ed25519 or RSA 2048/4096) in OpenSSH format, right in your browser.

How do I generate an SSH key?

Choose a key type (Ed25519 is recommended) and press Generate keys. The browser’s Web Crypto API creates the key pair locally and shows the OpenSSH public key for servers and GitHub, and the private key to save as ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.

Using the keys

  1. Save the private key as ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 (or id_rsa) and run chmod 600 on it.
  2. Add the public key to the server’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys, or to GitHub → Settings → SSH keys.
  3. Optionally add a passphrase: ssh-keygen -p -f ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.

For production servers, generating keys with ssh-keygen on your own machine is the gold standard; this tool is equivalent and never transmits the keys.

Frequently asked questions

Ed25519 or RSA?

Ed25519: shorter, faster and secure. Use RSA 3072/4096 only for old systems that do not support Ed25519.

Are the keys sent to your server?

No, they are generated and shown only in your browser.

Why is Ed25519 unavailable?

Older browsers lack Ed25519 in Web Crypto — update the browser or choose RSA.
