What do HTTP status codes mean?

An HTTP status code is the three-digit number a server returns with every response. 1xx are informational, 2xx mean success, 3xx are redirects, 4xx are client errors (such as 404 Not Found) and 5xx are server errors (such as 503 Service Unavailable).
