What is HowTo schema?

HowTo schema is structured data for instructional content that lists the steps, time, cost, supplies and tools needed, so machines can understand a guide step by step.

How to write the steps

Enter one step per line. Optionally give a step a short name with Name | instruction. Add the page URL and each step gets an anchor link (#step1, #step2…) — add matching IDs to your headings.

Is HowTo still worth it?

Google stopped showing HowTo rich results in 2023. The markup is still valid schema.org: it helps Bing and AI assistants that read structured data understand your instructions. If rich results are your only goal, focus on FAQ-style answers and clear headings instead.

Paste the generated <script type="application/ld+json"> block anywhere in the page's HTML (the head is common), then validate it with Google's Rich Results Test or our Structured Data Checker. Markup must describe content that is visible on the page.
